It's not possible. T-mobile disabled that feature on the SideKick 3 because they'd rather have you pay them to add ringtones for the phone.
They let you listen to MP3' s on your phone but not assign one as your ringtone.

Fuck, dats just fucked up, i paid $300 for my shit and i cant get the features that $100 fone gets, dats fucked up.

To test a phone in the store before buying... open the phone web browser and type in "wap.crostel.com" then type something like "nelly" or something into the search box and you will get the ringtone on the phone to test.
