Hi. I have been playing with my cell phone a lot lately, sending myself SMS messages over email regularly for various purposes, sometimes automated, and have lately been interested in sending myself ring tones and wallpaper.

Although SMS was easy to do on my own, I had no luck with ringtones or wallpaper. I made an account here, and have had even less luck :( I can't send myself a ringtone (and I tried telling it I have an older phone and chose motorola SMS), and also tried sending myself a wallpaper I uploaded and one someone else uploaded. I can't even send myself a plain old SMS from here :(

I'm using a fully up to date XP SP2, firefox 2.0.0.9, and flash player that I downloaded fresh a couple hours ago.

I even broke out tcpdump and watched network traffic. When I try to send myself an SMS message, i see the text I typed in get transfered to crostel.com. I'm not entirely sure if anything happened when I did the phone test to send myself a ring tone. There was some network traffic with crostel that I couldn't define, but it didn't come right away.

It's not your computer; it's your phone. The v170 simply can't support all these nice things like good ringtones and wallpapers. In fact, it doesn't even support shitty ringtones... I've tried sending myself midi tones and just get a jumble of about 3 seconds that vaguely resembles the beginning of my tone.

I haven't even been able to get an SMS through with this site though, and i know it supports SMS,. I also haven't been able to get shitty ringtones through. I'm not talking about good, just any :(

Even my wallpaper I tried uploading was carefully cropped and then pre-scaled to my phone's resolution 98x67

According to wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_V170 it supports picture messaging on ems.

Seems like there are still some unresolved questions, like maybe at&t and cingular are getting in the way of it working?

Thanks for the reply though.

Jeffrich,

If you are using a TracFone V170 some of the features that the phone would normally have may have been disabled by TracFone.

According to wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_V170 it says it has wireless internet and we all know you can't get internet on a TracFone Motorola V170. Probabaly one of the features that TracFone disabled on the V170.

I was using the V170 and I didn't have any problems downloading the midi ringtones, but only a few sounded right. As mentioned on the Wiki page the V170 only has 16 chords and that's why most midi's don't sound right.

Has any of this been mapped out on this site? It could be a cool feature to tell the site what phone you have, and it would already know from its database what features are supported (but still not stop you from experimenting with things that shouldnt work). There seems to be a lot of probably type reponses. No offense though, again I am happy you have responded.

And again, im not able to SMS myself from this site. Yet I was notified by an email from this site that was then forwarded over SMS that I got a response.

Strange, the grey text box on the left of my profile isnt working for me to send a text message, but the white text box just did work to send me a text message. Also the test of sms etc didnt work for me. No idea what is going on with all of that.

I definitely got an @crostel.com SMS message from that flash applet on my profile though.

Guys, forget about the v170 (I am sorry!) . There are only 6 Tracfone models that can work with Crostel (not counting the "older phones" trick, because those ringtones are not good). Only the phone I marked with an * supports mp3 realtones the rest just support midi. MOT-C261 MOT-V176 MOT-W370* LG-LG225* LG-LG1500* MOT-W375* -doug

I am sorry too, I can't let it rest just yet. I have used my v170 to receive text messages for a while now, but never sent one. So today I was playing around with a message I didn't plan on sending anyone, and noticed I could include pictures and audio. To my surprise, the pictures were different than the background I was familiar with, I didn't recognize any of them, There were also midi files I didn't recognize, and also the imy files I had created in the composer. So I fired off an SMS to myself with a small picture of a bicycle and one of the midis.

It turns out that when it returned to me, I had the option to extract the media (pic of the bike only, no midi). So I fired off another with an imy file I created, and again I could extract it. Well the ridiculous little bike is now my background, and the imy I sent myself appears to be no different than the original I composed.

The wallpapers on my phone are in gif format, but the bike that is now in my library is "EMSBMP" - and once google archives this web page, it will be the only web page on the internet with EMSBMP in it, although I assume the format is just BMP, and it was sent over EMS.

So is there any way I can craft an EMS to my cell phone to experiment on my own? I can send an email to mynumber@txt.att.net, but thats SMS. I can send an email to mynumber@mms.att.net, but my phone doesn't support mms. I can send an email to mynumber@ems.att.net, but it just bounces. I can't seem to find an EMS gateway, although SMS gateways are everywhere.

I suspect that if I found a phone capable of it, I might be able to send a background over MMS to something like a w370, and then EMS it to my phone. I can't give up the free incoming SMS by switching to a newer phone, and I would love to change my background. I am still not convinced that it can't be done, since I sort of did it already. I just have to learn how to send EMS from my computer, if that is possible.

Another entirely different approach might work too. I can save an incoming SMS to my SIM card, so it might be possible with a SIM reader/writer I could insert a fake SMS/EMS that the phone would pick up on and let me extract media from. The problem is I can't save my EMS messages to the SIM, so I don't know where I would start if it was even possible :(

I should also note that I tried sending this stuff to myself over email. I got the email, but images/audio were stripped out. I still remain convinced that I could send myself a background, if I could inject it into the EMS network somehow.

Crap. I mean I sent an email from my phone to my gmail account. That was where the images/audio were stripped out. This stuff can get complicated to explain :)

I sent myself an email with a MP3 tone in it and it got stripped out.

I sent myself an email with a pic and I got it though.

TracFone is blocking MP3's from downloading except from there website, at least on the W370, which is what I have.

Guys, forget about the v170 (I am sorry!)

Nice in theory, however, in -some- areas (see also, mine and I now know at least three other states)have limited phones that WORK in their area (a la tracfone who says 'oh this phone won't work in $area, sorry!). So Some can't just forget about the v170.
What is the issue with them that's making them any different than other tracfones? I'm curious.

(although I can't get any other phone or service right now, I would urge others who are able to get phone plans through less shady places to - I've already got a lawyer involved in regards to Tracfone.)

this is interesting you can send the pictures to your self for extraction but you cant see them through the display text, tried to send animations and you cant extract media to use as screen savers didn't try to send the tones because there to quiet, what r u suing tracfone for... i have learned you got to get then before they get you. i get minutes for 6cents a minute!!! and get stacks of free phones!!! thanks tracfone

you don't type it anywhere. when you go to download a ringtone (not a real tone) click the 'older phone' and make sure motorola sms is selected, not nokia sms.
